Inti Raymi , the most important cultural event in the country

“La fiesta del Sol“ or better known as the Inti Raymi is an Inca tradition that is commemorated since 1944 in the city of Cusco, as a sign of the vindication of the Inca culture. This celebration attracts many tourists and national and foreign visitors.

For the Magister Verónica Zevallos Gallardo, coordinator of the School of Tourism and Hotel Management of Universidad César Vallejo, Los Olivos campus, the celebration shows the worship of the Sun God or Inti. "Within the Inca festive calendar, it takes place every June 24; this celebration is the most important. This festivity had the presence of the entire Inca Empire, since for the Incas it was a New Year celebration, because it marked the beginning of an agricultural year," said the specialist.

Currently, the festival takes place with more than 800 people, including dancers, actors and musicians, who stage the festival in the temple of Qorikancha and the archaeological park of Sacsayhuaman in the Imperial City.

The importance of the celebration of Inti Raymi, at a cultural level, lies in the fact that it allows us to continue maintaining the millenary tradition of the Incas, which is why the value of this festivity is still alive.

The specialist explains that this event attracts many national and foreign tourists, who pay US$25 (adults) and US$10 (children) to watch the show; for this reason, the attraction and visit of tourists allows boosting the local economy and reactivating tourism. The State, through Mincetur, promotes this important event, which seeks to relaunch tourism and promote greater economic growth in the region

Recommendations to attend the Festival of the Sun

The specialist recommends those who wish to attend the celebration of Inti Raymi, to contact a formal travel agency to obtain tickets and book in advance the lodging establishments that are scarce due to the high season.

They should always keep themselves informed about the program; the tourist information booths provide the necessary guidance to the traveler in a free and friendly manner.

Costs

Travel costs, lodging and food establishments vary according to the service required. The transfer to Cusco can be by air or land, tickets are cheaper if purchased in advance. In terms of hotels, there are tourist hostels and hotels from 1 to 5 stars, whose costs per night vary from S/100 soles to USD1000. Restaurants also have a varied economic and gourmet offer.

"Let's continue knowing and valuing what is ours, it will be of great help for our country", culminated the specialist Zevallos.
